Who wouldn’t want to shred, burn, and scatter the ashes of their electric bill—especially during our global warming–impacted summers—without fear of their power getting turned off? This dreamy scenario may soon be within reach thanks to the Axiom House, an 1,800-square-foot ultramodern abode that creates all its own power through solar panels and other energy-friendly technology.
These so-called net-zero homes—which make as much energy as they consume—have been possible for a while. Six hundred such homes are already in existence across the U.S. Yet according to Fast Company, they haven’t yet taken off commercially because they’ve historically involved high-end architects and buckets of money to build. But here’s where the Axiom value proposition rears its eager head: Its approach is comparatively affordable, costing a mere $220,000 (land not included).
